Winemaking Team
David MaKieve - Head Winemaker
David grew up a stone's throw from the famous Napa and Sonoma wine regions. He began his education in pursuit of a degree in Astrophysics at Arizona with plans to work for NASA, but he quickly discovered his disdain for calculus and shifted his studies to Chemistry. Upon returning to California, a quick tour of the UC Davis Pilot Winery was enough to convince him to pursue a degree in Viticulture and Enology with the university. After several years working in the vineyards, cellar, and eventually the lab for a handful of wineries across Northern California, David went back to UC Davis as the assistant winemaker and staff researcher for the wine program. Eager to bring his experience to a new wine region, the opportunity to spearhead a new winery project in Utah was serendipitous. An avid fly fisherman, winter sports enthusiast, and astrophotographer; Utah has been the perfect place for David to call home.
Brian Boyse - Assistant Winemaker
Brian was born and raised in Washington State. Originally graduated from Central Washington University with a degree in psychology and advertising, with an intent to get into marketing. However, during his senior year he changed course and fell in love with wine and specifically wine production after working at a winery. Following graduation, he abandoned marketing and dived head first into the wine industry. After working in various regions of both Washington and California, racking up several vintages, he spent 6 years abroad, making wine down in Australia and New Zealand. He’s done just about every job in the industry from grape to glass, gaining a base of wine making philosophy and styles working for both large and small producers across the world. After missing his home country, he relocated to Utah to join Purple Sky in the summer of 2024. Catch him in his free time practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, weight lifting, or traveling (20 countries and counting).
Hermann Reichert - Assistant Winemaker
Hermann Reichert, hails from Chile with family roots in Germany. Growing up in Santa Cruz, in the heart of the Colochagua Valley, famous for Cabernet and Carmenere, wine was an integral part of life. Originally studying Biology at university, his passion for wine made him switch to a degree in viticulture and enology. He’s been in the industry since 2010, working various jobs across multiple regions in Oregon, California and his native Chile. He was excited to relocate here, a state with a blank wine slate, eager to develop a name for Utah wines.
Outside of the winery, Hermann is usually found hiking in the mountains, playing the piano, or on a board whether it be a skate, snow, or surf-board.
Kahlua - Quality Assurance
Kahlua (aka Lulu), is our 8 year old resident winery dog who was rescued as a young pup. She doesn't like wine, but she’s a big fan of treats, belly rubs, and the park. You can find her supervising the winemakers in between her work naps.
